Dinamika Gender Dalam Tafsir Q.S. An-Nisa’ Ayat 34: Perspektif Amina Wadud

The debate on gender relations in Islam continues to evolve, particularly regarding the interpretation of Q.S. An-Nisā’ [4]: 34, which contains the concepts of qiwāmah, nusyūz, and ḍaraba.This verse has often been understood as legitimizing male authority over women, leading to various critiques and reinterpretations within contemporary Qur’anic exegesis. This study seeks to answer two questions: how does Amina Wadud interpret Q.S. An-Nisā’ [4]: 34, and what gender dynamics emerge from her interpretation? The research employs a qualitative approach through library research. Primary data are drawn from Amina Wadud’s Qur’an and Woman, while secondary data consist of classical and contemporary tafsir works, books, and relevant scholarly literature. Data were analyzed using a descriptive-qualitative method based on Amina Wadud’s feminist hermeneutical approach. The findings reveal that Wadud interprets qiwāmah as a functional responsibility rather than an indication of male superiority over women. The concept of nusyūz is understood as a relational issue that should be resolved through justice and mutual understanding, while ḍaraba is interpreted within the moral framework of the Qur’an, emphasizing non-violence and ethical conflict resolution. Her interpretation reflects a reconstruction of gender relations that is more egalitarian and grounded in the Qur’anic principles of tawḥīd, justice, and the equal dignity of all human beings.
